Dropping Dimes Mock Draft Blog 2007: Round 1, Pick 8

I’m not going to lie. While the first five picks in hoops this year can likely be taken in any order, it gets a bit dicey towards the end of the first round. This is one year that lacks a clear-cut choice at the top, which makes it that much better for those at the bottom who get to scoop up two top-15 players.
Unfortunately, if you do land the eighth selection, you’ll have some decisions to make. When selecting at the eighth spot, you’ve likely seen four big name forwards and a shooting guard taken. Then it starts to get tricky like Run DMC. Two point guards were just selected ahead of me, so I’m sensing that there’s going to be a decent run on big men. This leaves me no choice but to lead the way and select:
Amare Stoudemire, PF/C, Phoenix Suns

Sarge punked Nash a bit last year by digging up one ugly photo of the two-time MVP. You can relive that blog entry here. Disturbing news broke today that an NBA ref bet on games that he was officiating; allegations of point shaving are sure to arise. The integrity of the league has been threatened, and it would be an utter disaster if more than this official were found to be involved.
While David Stern wades through this fiasco, fantasy ballers can thankfully count on Nash’s production. He might have been ousted by Chris Bosh in our one-on-one tourney, and Bosh is still alive and has at match-up that finishes at the end of this week, but Nash is one of the few sure things in fantasy ball.

Fig Cap: Gil Zero Is Like A Super Almond Joy… Sometimes He Feels Like A Nut, Sometimes He Still Does!
Oh man… the stars in the Dropping Dimes universe just seem aligned as such that I write about all the crazies, huh? Last year, Alvin got to do the honors of writing about HIBACHI! Check it here.
In any case, Gilbert Arenas is a little nutty. The boy can obviously ball with the best of them… he just adds some flair and character to his persona with some of the things he does off and on the court. Regardless, all I know is that the man puts up some pretty damn good numbers that make me do the Chris Rock eye bulging out of his face thing and pop lock Justin Timberlake style… not that I was paying close attention to every detail of JT’s slide step utilizing his big toe to provide the effect of gliding. I’m just saying.
Anyway… check out the stats the past three years and you’ll see why it’s easy to get excited:
2004-05: 80 G; 40:53 Min; 43.1 FG%; 2.6 3PTM; 81.4 FT%; 4.7 RPG; 5.1 APG; 3.0 TO; 1.7 SPG; 0.3 BPG; 25.5 PPG
2005-06: 80 G; 42:17 Min; 44.7 FG%; 2.5 3PTM; 82.0 FT%; 3.5 RPG; 6.1 APG; 3.7 TO; 2.0 SPG; 0.3 BPG; 29.3 PPG
2006-07: 74 G; 39:47 Min; 41.8 FG%; 2.8 3PTM; 84.4 FT%; 4.6 RPG; 6.0 APG; 3.2 TO; 1.9 SPG; 0.2 BPG; 28.5 PPG

Dirk Nowitzki followed a MVP season with a less than stellar performance in the playoffs. In this year’s playoffs, the Dallas Mavericks were facing elimination in Game 6 in Golden State, Dirk went 4-for-16 from the field and finished the game with a disappointing 14 points and 12 rebounds and no threes. The #1 seeded Mavs were eliminated by the 8th seed Golden State Warriors and Dirk Nowitzki was racked over the coals for his lack luster performance. The performance was almost as bad as his favorite German pop star, David Hasselhoff, drunk eating pizza off the kitchen floor. Fantasy ballers do not care too much what happens in the playoffs, it is the performance in the regular season that is important.

The Rich Get Richer: Steve Francis, Free Agent

I’m not sure where I went wrong, but while I’m sitting here in an office that faces a parking garage, Steve Francis is not only fresh off of a $30 million buyout, but he’s now the NBA’s newest free agent. A free agent that’s likely to sign a deal with a very good team, for even more money.
The Miami Herald reports that “Franchise” cleared waivers last night and will now test the free agent market. Conveniently, Francis has narrowed down his list of possible destinations. Here’s a hint: Milwaukee is not on the list.
Of the four teams that the veteran has chosen to be possible suitors, three of them are Western Conference teams looking to go a bit further in the playoffs than their past suggests, and one Eastern Conference team that I hear has a fairly nice beach scene near by.

Yi Jianlian, Milwaukee Bucks, We Hardly Knew Ya
Posted by Scott Sargent Categories: Editorial, Rookies, Rumors, Trades, Milwaukee Bucks,
What can I say? I’m itching to start dropping more and more science, so deal with this quick piece - I promise we’ll get rolling here soon!
ANYWAYS - Reports circulated today that Milwaukee Bucks draft pick, and sixth overall selection Yi Jianlian will not be coming to Milwaukee this season. Not surprising news by any means given that Jianlian hasn’t contacted any reps of the Bucks since draft night. Within the report, the Chinese representatives said the following:
“This is not—as media reports have said—because Milwaukee, as a city with very few Chinese people, is not good for Yi’s commercial development,” Chen said. “Rather we want to find a team suitable for Yi’s growth. That’s the root of the problem”
Well, even with this news being denied by Milwaukee, there will undoubtedly be some fantasy fallout.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft Blog 2007: Round 1, Pick 4

For the second season in a row, I’ve landed the fourth pick in the DroppingDimes Mock Draft Blog. For the second season in a row, I’ll be selecting none other than Kevin Garnett. Last season, it was Dirk Nowitzki that was ahead of the Big Ticket, and this season it is Kobe Bryant.
Granted, Kobe had a knee injury that kept a lot of drafters (present company included) away from him in the top five, but there’s little doubt that he should be taken within the top three this season. And while the aforementioned Nowitzki is still available, I’ll take one of the most dominant big men in the fantasy realm over the past five seasons.

Dropping Dimes One-on-One Tourney: Third Round Begins
Posted by Alvin Lai Categories: Site Features, Talent,
As we approach the dog days of summer, our one-on-one tourney starts its stretch run. The quarterfinals run through next week, and then our final four square off at the end of the month. Free agents were allowed to officially sign their contracts this past week, and Rashard Lewis is now one very rich man. I neglected to include him in our tourney this year, and that seems like a glaring omission now. So it goes. I think ‘Shard is too busy counting his dollar bills this summer to participate anyways.

Dennis won our “experts” roto league this past season, and his team was fronted by the Matrix. It surprised me that he passed up on him here, but I can understand how the writer in him wanted to have the fun of writing about Kobe of no fixed address. You don’t need me to tell you that Shawn Marion is darn good in fantasy hoops. First round picks rarely win your league for you, but any AK-47 owner of the last couple of years will tell you they can sure lose them. Let’s take a look at what makes Marion a fantasy monster in this very early look towards the coming season.
